Marie Alles Fernando began painting as a child in Sri Lanka. What was once her hobby has now become an incredibly successful career, spanning four decades. Fernando focuses her art on Sri Lankan village life, depicting the quiet and rhythmic pace of this simpler lifestyle, while still managing to capture the excitement and hustle of her subjects. Fernando executes her works so masterfully that it is no surprise that she has exhibited her pieces at numerous prestigious galleries around the world, such as the Ring gallery in Vienna and the Lionel Wendt gallery in Colombo. Fernando has also won many awards. Most notably, she received the Zonta Award in 2000 for her contributions to Sri Lankan art.
“My art is influenced by what I read and the experiences I have in life. I try to paint in terms oflight and shade. Life is full of light and shade – light being happiness and shade the sadness.”
